These Greek meatballs in tomato sauce are a hearty and flavorful dish. The mix of spices and fresh herbs gives the meatballs a distinctive flavor, while the tomato sauce rounds it off beautifully. Perfect as a main dish with a side dish or in pita pockets for a Greek sandwich!
Ingredients for 2 people:
For the meatballs:- 300g minced meat (beef, lamb or mixed)
- 2 tbsp Minos ORGANIC extra virgin olive oil
- 1/2 onion, finely chopped
- 1 carrot, finely grated
- A few leaves of fresh basil, finely chopped
- A few leaves of fresh parsley, finely chopped
- a few leaves of fresh mint, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 1 tsp curry
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 egg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Wheat flour for rolling the meatballs
- 2 tbsp Minos extra virgin olive oil for frying
For the tomato sauce:
- 400 g strained tomatoes
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp Minos extra virgin olive oil for frying
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation:
Preparation time: approx. 45 minutes
Difficulty level: medium
- In a bowl, mix the ground beef, chopped onion, grated carrot, chopped garlic, egg, curry powder, cumin, oregano, chopped basil, chopped parsley and chopped mint. Season with salt and pepper.
- Knead the minced meat mixture well until all ingredients are well combined. Add Minos ORGANIC extra virgin olive oil and mix everything well again.
- Form small meatballs from the mixture.
- Roll the meatballs in flour so that they have a light coating of flour.
- Heat Minos extra virgin olive oil in a frying pan and fry the meatballs over medium heat for about 20 minutes until golden brown on both sides.
- Drain the meatballs on a plate lined with kitchen paper.
- For the tomato sauce, heat Minos extra virgin olive oil in a separate frying pan and fry the chopped onion until translucent. Add the chopped garlic and fry briefly until fragrant.
- Add the pureed tomatoes, stir in oregano, salt and pepper and simmer the sauce over low heat until it has thickened slightly.
- Add the fried meatballs to the tomato sauce and let them simmer in the sauce for a few minutes to allow the flavors to combine.
- Serve the Greek meatballs with the homemade tomato sauce. You can garnish them with fresh basil and parsley.
